The Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department Highlights Lithium-Ion Battery Safety During Fire Prevention Week
The Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for Fire Prevention Week, October 5–11, with this year’s theme: “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
Lithium-ion batteries power everyday devices—from phones and laptops to e-bikes, scooters, and power tools. While they’re convenient, improper use or disposal can quickly become a fire hazard. That’s why this year’s campaign focuses on safe buying, charging, and recycling practices.
Key safety reminders include:
-
Always use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Replace cords that are damaged or no longer work properly.
-
Check for a nationally recognized testing lab mark before buying products with lithium-ion batteries—many online products don’t meet safety standards.
-
Charge devices on a hard surface, never on beds, couches, or under pillows, and unplug them once fully charged.
-
Large devices like e-bikes or scooters should be charged outdoors, on a flat, dry area, away from sunlight, water, and tripping hazards.
-
Never throw lithium-ion batteries or devices in the trash or regular recycling bins. Instead, bring them to an approved recycling site—https://ocrra.org/battery-management or visit https://www.call2recycle.org/locator/ to find a drop-off location near you.
Lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life, but they come with real risks if handled carelessly, we’re encouraging everyone to make smart choices and help prevent fires in our community.
